چکیده

The interplay between feeling and thinking has been a subject of scholarly discussion and spirited debate since antiquity. The last few decades have witnessed a mounting interest in the impact of affective or mood states on learning, memory, decision making, and allied cognitive processes. Much of this interest has initially focused on two phenomena: mood-congruent cognition —the observation that a given mood promotes the processing of information that possesses a similar affective tone or valence, and mood-dependent memory —the observation that information encoded in a particular mood is most retrievable in that mood, irrespective of the information’s affective valence. More recently, and especially since the publication of the previous edition of this Handbook , numerous studies have found that positive and negative moods can also influence memory due to their effects on information processing styles or strategies. This chapter examines the

Effects of induced and naturalistic mood on the temporal allocation of attention to emotional information.

Building upon recent findings that affective states can influence the allocation of spatial attention, we investigate how state, trait and induced mood are related to the temporal allocation of attention to emotional information. In the present study, 125 unscreened undergraduates completed a modified rapid serial visual presentation task designed to assess the time course of attention to posit...

Decision mechanisms underlying mood-congruent emotional classification.

There is great interest in understanding whether and how mood influences affective processing. Results in the literature have been mixed: some studies show mood-congruent processing but others do not. One limitation of previous work is that decision components for affective processing and responses biases are not dissociated. The present study explored the roles of affective processing and resp...

A Double Dissociation in the Roles of Serotonin and Mood in Healthy Subjects

BACKGROUND Affective disorders are associated with altered cognitive performance. However, the precise interaction between affect and cognition is unclear. The manipulation of serotonin (5-HT), a neurotransmitter implicated in affect, influences performance on "hot" cognitive tasks that require the processing of affective stimuli, but manipulation of affect via mood induction influences perform...

On being sad and evasive: Affective influences on verbal communication strategies in conflict situations

Does mood influence people s tendency to engage in evasive, equivocal communication when facing conflict situations? Based on recent affect–cognition theories and research on verbal communication, this experiment predicted that negative mood should increase, and positive mood decrease the level of verbal evasiveness in conflict situations, and that high situational conflict should magnify these...

COMMENTARIES Where Has the Feeling Gone? The Signal Function of Affective States

In the target article, Forgas (this issue) presents his affect infusion model (AIM), which attempts to account for a wide spectrum of phenomena in the interplay of affect and cognition. Specifically, it is proposed that the model explains how affect influences both what information is processed (i.e., content) and how this information is processed (i.e., process). Forgas is undoubtedly correct ...
